Not all African American fathers are absent. There are African American fathers who are prepared, capable, and affecting change in their households. The 10 African American fathers interviewed in this study provided significant and useful information about how they are managing to foster academic success in their homes. These fathers made a decision to increase their interaction, availability, and accessibility, by taking on more responsibility. This is a direct result of their parental identity. Fathers who are present construct their identity as a father to include ways to maximize their children?s development. They see their role as necessary, valuable, and effective as they create a conducive environment for overall achievement. This environment is enhanced when an African American father is present physically, psychologically, and spiritually, as demonstrated in this study. African American fathers can make a difference. The 10 African American fathers in this study fostered academic success in their homes. These fathers participated in their children?s schooling to ensure that they were getting the highest quality of education, and would not settle for anything less. Their paternal behaviors were evident and formed the model of the Eight Paternal Behaviors Fostering Academic Success. This model was developed from this study and provides a pattern for other African American fathers to implement in their parenting practices. The implementation of this model has implications for social change as it may lead to an increase in academic success within the African American community, one home at a time.
